Road Bike in Storage

August 2, 2011

I meant to put this up earlier, but my daughter was born much sooner than expected. Once she was born, I was too busy taking care of her, my son, and my wife, that I didn’t have much time to do stuff like this.

I knew that once she was born I would not have much time to ride. In fact, I knew that for the first few months I probably would not be able to ride at all. Once I am able to ride again, rides will be probably be sparse and sporadic. I might as well just ride my mountain bike for those rides. Our garage — where I keep my bikes — is quite damp and so not an ideal storage place for something as expensive as a carbon road bike. Keeping my bikes in the garage is very convenient and practical if I am going to be riding them once or twice a week, but if I am not going to be able to ride for months, I might as well move my bike out of that dampness and somewhere drier. So, my wife and I decided that it would be a good idea to put my bike upstairs. On the fourth floor. In a room we almost never go to and one we just use for storing things. So, my road bike is now in storage. It has been mothballed. Every once in a while I take a trip up there to make sure she’s okay (you know, make sure the leather bar tape and saddle are fine, pump up the tires, stuff like that) and almost every day I day dream about the time when I can ride it again.

The funny thing is that a few days before I put it in storage, I had decided that This Saturday I’ll take it up there. Well, that Saturday morning I did. And that Saturday night we drove to the hospital for the birth of our daughter. If I had waited one more day, I don’t know if I would have gotten a chance to put it up there.
